Workplace modernization among top priorities for large and medium sized organizations in Europe

Hexaware Technologies Limited, a leading global provider of Application, Infrastructure, BPS and Digital services announced that it has conducted a study titled “Digital Workplace in Europe” in partnership with PAC, a leading market research and consulting firm. This study reveals that nearly 63 percent of European businesses are planning to invest in the modernization of workplace applications, within the next two years. Workplace modernization is one of the top priorities for large and medium sized organizations in Europe. Close to three quarters of IT and HR managers that were interviewed believe that their work environments have a strong or critical influence on business success.

This is the first ever study conducted on critical issues related to workplace modernization across European enterprises. PAC has surveyed more than 180 IT and HR managers from a wide range of industries on trends, investment plans and challenges. The study indicates strong sentiments amongst business leaders to invest in modern workplace applications and technologies.

Of the survey participants, 52 percent consider the work environment to be very important for the success of their company. It is the most important issue for 6 percent of those asked. The respondents worked across various industries like services, retail, transportation and manufacturing. Among these 51 percent worked in services, retail and transportation industry and 49 percent represented the manufacturing industry.

Central Goals, Investment Plans and Barriers

Until few years ago, the role of workplace managers was primarily centered around efficiency targets. But today, they have to juggle with diverse set of business priorities. On one hand, they are asked to increase employee satisfaction and support diverse needs, including the promotion of collaboration and innovation. On the other hand, they have to ensure a high degree of security and cost efficiency. If these priorities are to be achieved, the implementation of digital workplace must be aligned with organizational goals as well as with employee needs.

“Business transformation is an inside-out process with employees placed at the center of the journey. As many enterprises have realized its significance, they are implementing digitization at their workplaces before taking it across to their customers. PAC’s ‘Digital Workplace in Europe’ study resonates this trend and has brought out unparalleled insights related to digital initiatives that are followed by European companies,” says Girish Ravindran, Vice President, Infrastructure Management Services-Europe, Hexaware Technologies Limited.

Ground to be made up in the fundamentals

Enterprises face initial concerns on expanding infrastructural and organizational fundamentals. This is reflected by the fact that classical issues are listed high up on the investment agendas. Reflecting on the survey participants expenditure plan, 61 percent plan their expenditures for improving the quality of their HR support, 60 percent plan for unified communication and collaboration(UCC) integration, 56 percent for improving network performance, and 55 percent for consolidating their workplace infrastructure.

France and Belgium are Forerunners

Within the framework of the study, PAC presents its first Digital Workplace Index, which allows the variations in the levels of workplace modernization to be assessed according to region and industry. The average index value is 74, but the results for individual companies vary widely.

Approximately 10 percent of companies in Europe are in the “early stage”, 52 percent are “on the way” and 38 percent are perceived to be in the “advanced stage”. France and Belgium based companies are ahead of the pack, especially in mobility and cloud. Companies in Germany are not as far ahead, but show a more than average willingness to invest. A thorough analysis of the industries shows that the digital workplace is a hot emerging area across many service industries, and also across industrial sectors (taking industrial IoT into account).

“The digital workplace can only be successfully implemented if it is realized as a holistic design and service concept,” says Dr. Andreas Stiehler, Principal Analyst for Digital Enterprise at PAC. “In addition, businesses should be prepared to take newer paths in strategy, design, management, operations, and support. While large investments are already being made in the procurement of modern workplace technologies, the implementation of the digital workplace as a holistic design and service concept is still in its infancy.”
