Business Challenges 
Our client, a pioneering company in data analytics for the airline industry, sought modernization for mainframe, apps, and data infrastructure because of its legacy systems. They faced issues with data inconsistency, redundancy in operations, manual reconciliations, and ultimately, missed opportunities.  

The organization faced challenges in making business improvements swiftly. Issues with resources and infrastructure caused delays in developing and launching new features for multiple data sharing and business analytics applications, affecting the company’s competitiveness and growth.  

A monolithic, centralized application faced a persisting problem – updates took four to six weeks because the smallest changes required involvement from UI developers. Consequently, many other applications also couldn’t handle huge amounts of data optimally, making them slow.  

To fix this, the client wanted to shift more than 16 applications to the cloud to lessen the load on the database. And another significant challenge they looked to tackle was – limited database capacity. Despite migrating apps to the cloud, this bottleneck would still exist, especially because of existing Oracle databases. 

Legacy Applications and a Monolithic System  

  • Monolith Architecture: A single tightly integrated and interconnected system, proved challenging to scale, maintain, and update, increasing complexity for the software structure. 
  • End of Life App Servers: App servers that had reached their end-of-life posed significant risks, including security vulnerabilities and lack of vendor support, leading to system instability. 
  • Duplication of Functionality: The existence of redundant or overlapping features and functionalities within the system caused confusion, inefficiency, and high maintenance costs. 
  • Single Point of Entry: A system bottleneck emerged at the system’s single access point, hampering scalability and the system’s effectiveness in handling concurrent user demands. 
  • Lack of Automation in Teradata: Manual processes and lack of data automation resulted in increased human errors, longer processing times, and higher operational costs. 
  • Lack of Modern Databases: Teradata lacked support for modern databases and data structures, limiting its ability to handle diverse data types efficiently. 
  • High Upfront TCO for Teradata: The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) associated with Teradata was substantial, demanding a significant initial investment along with piling up expenses. 


Cloud Transformation with Amaze® Platform  

Hexaware proposed a three-phase cloud migration approach, designed to enhance application scalability and performance. We leveraged Amaze® platform to modernize the entire mainframe, applications, and data infrastructure.  

We followed a roadmap for poised to improve efficiency, scalability, and flexibility with new application and data architecture. We introduced highly scalable solution that modernized legacy monolithic applications to a microservices-based architecture: 

Phase 1 | Our solution comprised on retaining the existing setup and changing environment from WebLogic to Tomcat for applications. For mainframe apps, we decoupled the data and functional components from 16+ business processes on mainframes.  

We modernized the data process from mainframe to AWS platform. All settlement on premise Teradata objects were migrated to Snowflake on AWS and Change Data Capture (CDC) synchronization was placed between on-premises and Snowflake. 

Phase 2 | We enabled scaling in the areas where we had specifically standardized the cloud foundation. We achieved the following key advancements in phase 2 for applications, mainframe, and data:  

Application Track  

  • Revamped Applications: Transitioned from Angular 1.x and Struts 1.x to React JS, and Java Backend to Spring Boot microservices. 
  • Streamlined Infrastructure: Migrated applications to AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS)/Elastic Container Service (ECS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) equivalents, transforming Java apps from Tomcat to Spring Cloud and leveraging AWS services for enhanced performance and efficiency. 
  • Modernized Java Backend Applications: Migrated from on-premises to Spring Boot deployed on AWS EKS/ECS. 
  • Revitalized User Interface: Transitioned from Struts/Angular to React JS for enhanced user experience. 
  • Enhanced CI/CD Automations: Leveraged AWS cloud platform to optimize existing CI/CD processes, boosting development efficiency and agility. 

Mainframe Track 

  • Mainframe Application Migration: The mainframe applications were lifted and shifted to the AWS cloud, harnessing modern scalability and performance. 
  • AWS Migration: Decoupled the business processes from the mainframe environment and migrated it to the AWS cloud platform, resulting in enhanced flexibility and scalability. 
  • Enhanced Process Flexibility: The business processes of the mainframe architecture were revised to run independently, contrary to the previous setup where there was file dependency between a few processes. 
  • Batch Job Optimization: Revamped batch jobs by rewriting them as Spring Batch. 
  • CI/CD Automation: Enhanced existing CI/CD automation and migrated to AWS, streamlining development and deployment processes. 

Data Track 

  • Data Management with Cloud-based Data Stores: The corresponding Ab Initio jobs were repointed to the new cloud-based data stores, optimizing data management. 
  • Ab Initio Cloud Migration: By the end of phase 2, Ab Initio – a comprehensive platform for data integration, data quality, and analytics – was moved to the cloud. 
  • Minimizing Data Management Costs: The option of moving the corresponding Ab Initio jobs to the cloud was considered to minimize data ingress and egress costs for greater savings. 

Phase 3 | In the next phase, we will prioritize migrating the database from Oracle to AWS Aurora Postgres and complete the migration of remaining business processes. Furthermore, we aim to enhance ETL jobs, repointing them to either the customer’s data lake or identified operational stores/AWS PostgreSQL DB.
