Reshaping the Health Data
Landscape for Growth &
New Opportunities
Big data has the power to transform healthcare and the resourcefulness for improving health and wellbeing of populations. For example, precision medicine is made possible with the help of insights gleaned from genetic, lifestyle and health history data.
Today, treatments can be personalized for certain types of cancers to suit specific patient drug responses and genetic changes in the cancerous cells. Insights from big data can potentially strengthen early warning systems for major public epidemics, as was demonstrated by BlueDot’s outbreak risk software in the COVID-19 pandemic.
It can be observed that if the potential of data is huge, then the potential of medical data is boundless.
NEW DATA PROCESS REVOLUTIONIZES
THE HEALTHCARE LANDSCAPE
A REVOLUTIONARY FORCE IN THE
BIOMEDICAL WORLD
Our client is a global conglomerate formed by the merger of a leading healthcare data provider and a global contract research organization. They specialize in human data science with over a century of experience in business intelligence and analytics focused on healthcare.
POWERFUL DATA CHAINED
BY LEGACY SYSTEMS
Digital revolution had opened data floodgates, especially for our client's enterprise where they had access to unfathomable amounts of data collated globally, including millions of patient records, pharma sales data, social media feeds, institutional data and information emanating from government agencies.
Belatedly, our client realized that their existing IT infrastructure was incapable of handling the overload of data that was pouring in every second from all quarters.
The legacy Enterprise Data Warehouses were equipped to handle, store and retrieve structured data, but were not designed for real-time analytics or data transformation.
Some challenges faced
by our client
Business Risks were Critical
• Business, operational and information security
risks from outdated and unsupported technology was proving difficult to update and operate
• 100+ systems nearing end-of-life support only complicated the matter further
Costs were Skyrocketing
Many teams were at work supporting multiple systems for the same processing activities
High annual license costs for legacy infrastructure and increasing expenses for regular updates made operations a very expensive affair

Support Business Strategy
Demand from technology solutions, RWE and even clients (client services) was unsustainable on the existing infrastructure
Lack of speed and capacity impacted client service deliverables and there was no support for near real-time or large volume data delivery
•
•
A TOTAL REVAMP WAS
IMPERATIVE
We initiated a multi level program to replatform the data factory and hinged our efforts on next-generation cloud and big data technologies like Hadoop and Spark. These brought in multi level and much required essential improvements to the client’s data acquisition, data processing, data warehousing and data access at a time when big data presented key challenges and growth opportunities.
Data Lake – For fast, reliable and secure data storage feature
Enabled low cost storage for large volumes of raw data
Gave business users, immediate access to data (no more waiting for the data warehousing (DW) team to model data)
•
•
Replaced slow batch processing with fast parallel processing
Parallel Processing & Data Streaming – Ultimate processing and accessibility
•
•
Enabled data streaming for (almost) real-time data provision
Leveraged on-premise, public and private clouds
Multi tenant cloud – Gaining the cloud advantage
•
•
Ensured flexibility and scalability to suit capacity needs
Cloud based data warehouse made it possible to respond to high demand with lesser disruptions
•
Leveraged on-premise, public and private clouds
Multi tenant cloud – On demand cloud computing advantage
Ensured flexibility and scalability to suit capacity needs
•
•
Made it possible to respond to higher demands with lesser disruptions due to ‘elastic’ cloud base
•
Provided access to data irrespective of the data format
DPaaS - Data Processing as a Service
Provided a virtual, single point of reference for data and services across IMS
•
•
SOA – Service Oriented Architecture
Reduced duplication and wasted efforts
Enabled reuse of modules for standard functionalities
•
•
Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence
Made automation possible for big data processing and ‘consuming’ instantaneous
Automated key activities, e.g. part of data modeling processes or data supply analysis
•
•
MAKING THINGS RIGHT FOR OUR CLIENT
Flexibility and Scalability
System could adapt to capacity needs and achieved the ability to respond to unprecedented demands with minimal disruptions, thanks to the new ‘elastic’data warehouse
Cost per ‘processed byte’ also decreased due to the use of extensive ML to process and analyze data
We were able to build a unique data analytics platform and make data available from across more than 15 countries (and counting) on the data lake
Faster Time-to-Market
Data Analytics platform made it easy to store, manage and analyze data
Time-to-Market for new applications improved vastly
We developed and deployed a focused approach by reducing the time taken to generate country-level analytics from 4-6 weeks to a mere 6 hours
We helped our client achieve their goal of making new assets available for all user needs, thereby delivering superior experience and benefits to end customers
New Revenue
Rapid prototyping on the platform enabled
shorter time-to-market for new offerings. This enabled our client to leverage the API Economy, which in turn generated further revenue in newer areas
Since all data sources were now available at a single location, global teams were able to build 4-5 variants of solutions that addressed all their needs, together. Our client was able to leverage ‘build once, deploy anywhere’ solution
SMALL PROGRESS
ADDED TO BIG RESULTS
Human health data is complex, language is subjective, contexts are fluid and definitions are evolving. Despite the inherent challenges in the client’s business, Hexaware helped the client excel at their core business activities and played a critical part in getting answers to diverse questions on human health and also in securing the well being of our future generations. After all, health is the greatest wealth!
